Souloworks/Andrea E. Woods & Dancers is a modern dance
company creating and
performing collaborative works using dance, music, spoken word
and/or
multimedia as contemporary African American folklore. The dances
are sometimes
narrative, sometimes aesthetic and often draw on themes such
as family, nature,
community, spirituality and African American history and culture.
The dances have
a generous world view while centralizing, affirming, and exemplifying
a
positive reflection of African American culture.
Souloworks creative choreographic process is inspired
by folk traditions
such as blues, jazz, folk music, African American literature,
family folklore and
movement reflective of the African American social and cultural
experience.
Combining various performance elements such as song, spoken
word, music, solo
as well as group dances, is part of the home grown griotte style
signature of
Souloworks.
